Security Magazine: Cybersecurity needs more boots on the ground, veterans can help

The first time I heard the term “social engineering,” it wasn’t in the context of cybersecurity, but during Navy training in the late 1980s. I was stationed at Point Loma submarine base in San Diego, where part of the standardized boot camp and duty station training included learning how to identify the original social engineering attempts, live and in-person. In the bars and tattoo parlors surrounding the base, it wasn’t uncommon for people to strike up conversations with the hidden motive of gaining more information about base access.
